Paediatric First Aid (12 Hours)

Highfield Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (PFA) RQF   


Who Should Attend?
This course is ideal for professionals responsible for the care of young children and infants, up to 8 years old. It is especially suited for individuals working in settings such as day nurseries, private nursery schools, pre-schools, after-school clubs, childminders, and carers of children at home.


Delegates must be aged 18 or older and have a basic command of English (Level 2). While support for non-native English speakers may be available, it is subject to time and group size limitations.


Course Duration:
12 Hours (8 hours face to face, 4 hours online)


Location:
The course is available at our training centre in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, or it can be delivered on-site at your workplace for groups of up to 12 delegates. 

Course Overview:
The Paediatric First Aid course is designed to equip you with the vital skills to handle emergency situations involving children and infants. It is delivered in two parts:


Part 1: Online
This self-directed online module is designed to be completed at your own pace within 6 weeks before attending the face-to-face session. It takes approximately one day to complete and covers the theoretical elements of paediatric first aid, giving you the flexibility to learn in your own environment.


Part 2: Face-to-Face
The face-to-face session takes place over one day in a small group with fellow participants. Led by a qualified trainer, this practical session covers lifesaving skills and allows you to practice key techniques in small group activities. You will also complete written and practical assessments, which include topics from the online section. Social distancing measures will be in place during all group activities.


Course Content:
The course covers a wide range of essential topics to equip you with the skills to handle paediatric emergencies, including:

  • The role and responsibilities of the first aider
  • Managing emergencies
  • Communication and casualty care
  • Allergic reactions
  • Asthma and diabetic emergencies
  • Bleeding
  • Bone, muscle, and joint injuries
  • Burns and scalds
  • Childhood conditions (e.g. meningitis)
  • Eye injuries
  • Choking
  • Foreign object removal
  • Head injuries
  • Heat and extreme cold conditions
  • Poisoning, bites, and stings
  • Child and baby resuscitation (CPR)
  • Seizures
  • Spinal injuries
  • Treatment of an unconscious casualty
  • Managing shock and unresponsiveness in babies and children


Assessment and Certification:
The course includes ongoing assessment throughout both the online and face-to-face components. Delegates will complete knowledge checks online, as well as practical and written assessments during the face-to-face session. Upon successful completion, delegates will receive a Level 3 Paediatric First Aid Certificate.
